Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 131
“H IS life was gentle, and the elements so mixed in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, ‘this was a man’.” Borrowing from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Peter Thomson paid tribute to his old mate and World Cup winning partner Kel Nagle, who passed away in a Sydney hospital on January 29. He was 94. Nagle was indeed gentle and a great man, on and off the golf course. One of seven children, Nagle’s introduction to golf came during the Depression when his family moved from their dairy farm to a house that backed onto Pymble Golf Club in Sydney. The head pro, Tom Popplewell, was looking for a junior assistant and a 15-year-old Nagle got the job ... and he was yet to play his first round of golf. As Nagle would say later: “That job changed my life.” Popplewell taught Nagle how to hold the club and how to stand at address and Nagle “worked the rest out myself.” Nagle missed out on joining the PGA in 1939 and the Second World War put his golfing career on hold as he joined the RAAF and rose through the ranks to become a sergeant. He eventually joined the PGA in 1946 at the age of 26 and played his first competitive round of golf that same year. He was a wild, big-hitter with a long backswing, which led to inconsistent scoring and very few wins. He broke through for his first big win at the 1949 Australian PGA Championship and collected another victory the following year in the West Australian Open, all while working as the club pro at Pymble Golf Club. 1 NIGHT $149PP TWIN SHARE 2 NIGHTS TWIN SHARE $280PP 3 NIGHTS TWIN SHARE $349 PP ENJOY: Deluxe suite accomm Free wifi Free in-house movies Unlimited golf + cart for the duration of stay Daily buffet breakfast Day spa vouchers STAY& PLAY southern highlands (02) 4862 8600 gibraltarbowral.com.au KEL NAGLE 1920-2015
