OF GOLF'S STRANGEST MODERN TALES 4 R OBERT ALLENBY’S story had whiskers all over it from the moment his face flashed across our screens looking like it had been on the wrong end of a nine iron. If it seems stranger than fiction, there’s probably a reason, and as Allenby’s tale sprouted legs and took off at breakneck pace towards the “only in America” section, it quickly became apparent that the truth of exactly what happened that night in Waikiki will probably never be known. Eyewitness accounts from homeless people, a missing wallet, a $1000 reward for a woman Allenby had accused of fabricating parts of her story, a phantom kidnapping, a bogus 10km car trip and now reports that he spent at least some of his evening at a local strip club; the Aussie golfer’s bizarre episode had everything. But what it didn’t have was a definitive version of exactly how he wound up unconscious on a Hawaiian sidewalk after missing the cut at the Sony Open, and how those vicious abrasions later found their way onto his head. The important thing is that the former top 20 player is safe and well, but that won’t stop the PGA Tour rumour mill keeping it bubbling along as one of the most inexplicably strange yarns to have hit the stands in, oh, well, actually only about a week. When it comes to weird stories and unsolved mysteries, golf’s biggest tour has a habit of turning up some absolute pearlers...
