Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 132
Y OU could set your watch to it. Every year on February 10, dad would stroll into the kitchen and, once we’d finished wishing him many happy returns, he’d casually float his annual birthday question: “you know I was born on the same day as Greg Norman?” It was more of a statement than a question, really, considering we’d heard it every single year since our little ears could understand him, and it was invariably trailed closely by his traditional follow-up: “he got all the golfing ability that day”. Sadly for us, Norman also got the cash, the yachts, the jets, the beachside mansions, the clothing line and an almost impossibly large business portfolio that continues to keep the Great White Shark’s golden pockets lined as he prepares to enter his 61st year. Sorry, dad, but the man with the signature straw hat may have left a somewhat more indelible mark on Australia’s sporting consciousness. Despite Adam Scott two years ago doing what no other Aussie has ever managed at Augusta, there’s no doubt that Australian golf’s halcyon days remain rooted in the mid-late 1980s and early ‘90s, thanks to one man alone. As kids we weren’t even that enamoured with golf, yet we’d still tune in on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and listen to Sandy Roberts bring us every moment from Huntingdale as a certain Queenslander racked up yet another Australian Masters title. As Roberts said, the tradition continued. Such was the great man’s pulling power. Now that even the weediest hitters can slug a ball well over 250 metres, thanks 1 NIGHT $149PP TWIN SHARE 2 NIGHTS TWIN SHARE $280PP 3 NIGHTS TWIN SHARE $349 PP ENJOY: Deluxe suite accomm Free wifi Free in-house movies Unlimited golf + cart for the duration of stay Daily buffet breakfast Day spa vouchers STAY& PLAY southern highlands (02) 4862 8600 gibraltarbowral.com.au
