Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 133
I T WAS with great sadness that the golfing world farewelled Charlie Sifford, the first black man ever to play on the PGA Tour, this month. Sifford [pictured] was a trailblazer, and Tiger Woods admitted that his own ascension to the top of the game would never have happened if Sifford hadn't kicked down plenty of doors in the middle of the last century. The racial barriers standing between Sifford and his dream of competing against the world’s best golfers were so ingrained that it took him until he was 39 years old before he was given his first PGA Tour start. With Sifford's lifetime of off-course battles in mind, it never ceases to amaze us how many trivial things modern golfers find to complain about. Here are 10 (on the following page) that have been known to afflict us all from time to time. Best we just take them on the chin and keep them to ourselves from now on.
