Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 134
FEATURE – 6 HOT HEADS AUSTRALIA’S Robert Allenby is one of the long line of professional golfers to have sworn that they’ve turned over a new leaf (many times) and discovered a more levelheaded, carefree version of themselves, only to crash and burn in a hail of expletives and arguing at the first sign of pressure. He’s fired up at Geoff Ogilvy, fought with and sacked a procession of caddies and coaches, and it seems that every Aussie golf fan has a story about watching the veteran unleash a torrent of obscenities at some point over the years. Allenby insists it all stems from him “just trying too hard”, but also notes that “if someone pisses you off that much, eventually you’ve got to tell them to get stuffed”. ROBERT ALLENBY RAGE GAUGE ALL hail the master of meltdowns. As far as we know, only one PGA Tour player in history has had temper tantrums so bad that his parents staged an intervention to break through the red mist that seemed to permanently cloud the American’s vision. Pat Perez’s rap sheet includes attempting to snap a club over his leg and making a kid cry after brushing aside his request for an autograph, and although he’s beginning to turn things around – both in his head and on the course – even he admits that the threat of another angry episode is ever-present. “There might be a situation where something rolls up and, who knows, it might come out again,” he said during a recent interview. Watch out when it does. PAT PEREZ RAGE GAUGE
