GOLF’S GRANDEST ARENA THE winner of this year’s 144th Open Championship at St Andrews will be crowned in front of the largest arena in the event’s 155-year history as a spectacular new grandstand arena, seating almost 10,000 people, will be created around the famous 1st, 17th and 18th holes (pictured above) of the Old Course. For the first time, a two-tiered grandstand will be erected behind the 18th green to further enhance the extraordinary atmosphere created by the grandstands located alongside the adjoining 1st fairway. The arena will be completed by a new L-shaped grandstand being constructed behind the 17th green and a stand sited by the 1st green. The grandstand behind the famous Road Hole will have a capacity of more than 4,000 and offer spectators a panoramic view of the 17th, 18th, 1st and 2nd holes. Golf Victoria chief executive Simon Brookhouse was thrilled by the final total and is confident the celebrity chef dinner initiative launched this year can become an annual event during tournament week. “It’s hard to imagine the difficulties families and children go through battling cancer. It is with the help of organisations like Challenge that these families are able to cope a little easier,” Brookhouse said. “The celebrity chef dinner we conducted at Barwon Heads Golf Club on the Friday evening was a tremendous success. "It was extremely pleasing to see the night being supported for such a wonderful cause."
