M ORE tthan any other tournament, the outcome of the Players Championship hinges on how the field negotiates the closing holes of each round. The flagship event on the US PGA Tour merges an elite field and a huge purse with a formidable golf course that favours precision over power. The fact that this combination has engineered a series of fascinating finishes since the tournament moved to TPC Sawgrass in 1982 only adds to its appeal and to the lustre of victory.
