PREVIEW dunked his second shot into the lake on the 72nd hole while nursing a two-stroke lead.The then-23-year-old saved his bacon with a nifty pitch and a ten-foot bogey-saving putt to survive by a stroke. More wizardry came two years earlier when Craig Perks finished eagle-birdie-par to claim his lone PGA Tour victory. The New Zealander required just one putt across those dramatic final three holes to see off Stephen Ames in a climax that may never be repeated. Another of the better stories to emerge from the tournament came in 2005 when, at age 48, short-hitting gallery favourite Fred Funk repelled the charges of veterans Tom Lehman and Scott Verplank plus overnight leader Luke Donald to win by a stroke after a gritty par save on the last green. He was 71. Peete will not only be remembered as one of the most prolific PGA Tour winners in the first half of the 1980s, highlighted by his victory in the 1985 Players Championship, but also for bridging the gap from early African-American players like Charlie Sifford and Lee Elder, to former World No. 1 ranked Tiger Woods.
