Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 147
O NCE an angling town that tried to deceive fish onto a line, Barwon Heads is more likely these days to be found fooling naive golfers into thinking its golf course is just as easily landed. We can assure you, it is anything but. A regular inclusion inside the top 20 of Golf Australia’s Top 100 Courses (and ranked No.7 Public Access Course), Barwon Heads GC offers a distinctive golfing experience you’d need to travel to Scotland to replicate. Traversing along the volatile Bass Strait with spectacular views of it on several holes, Barwon Heads is a true links layout where the complexity of a round can vary drastically with the changeable seasonal elements. On paper it is not overly long – just 5856m from the tips. But just as any other coastal track worth visiting, prevailing winds can make this relatively short course an exceptionally long walk. The uber-romantic yet seemingly benign course at Barwon Heads Golf Club is anything but a walkover, yet despite its Jekyll and Hyde façade, this old world layout found along Victoria’s windswept Bellarine Peninsula exudes an awfully alluring charm not easily forgotten once encountered. And it has an unshakably near-perfect design to thank for that. The illusion of simplicity begins at the first tee – a seemingly straightforward par-4 of just 299m to an elevated green, which in reality requires precise accuracy of length on the approach to get your round off to a solid start. Anything more and you’ll overshoot the green; less and you’ll find your ball rolling back down the hill whence it came. Welcome to Barwon Heads, where everything is not quite as it seems.
