Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 154 - The Open preview
SPIETH’S LOYALTY PAYS OFF JORDAN Spieth attracted criticism for opting to honour a commitment to the lowly John Deere Classic instead of heading to St Andrews early, but the hottest player in golf justified his decision with a gripping playoff victory that has him in the right frame of mind ahead of this week’s Open Championship. The tournament that launched Spieth’s rapid rise in the game two years ago has become a touchstone for the World No.2, as he once again emerged triumphant from a playoff, this time after carding a Saturday 61 then birdieing four of the last six holes on Sunday. Spieth and journeyman Tom Gillis finished tied at 20-under, pitting a 21-year-old and a 46-year-old against one another in extra time. After matching pars at the first playoff hole, Gillis speared the small-purse New South Wales PGA Championship where the Order of Merit will be decided. MORE > __ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ DUAL MEMBERSHIP TO OPEN DOORS THE PGA of Australia and Australian Ladies Professional Golf have announced a dual membership for their mutual members in a step towards a stronger alignment between the peak professional bodies. In addition, members of the ALPG wishing to also become members of the PGA of Australia are able to do so via the association’s world renowned trainee or bridging program. The new collaboration will see an increase in female PGA professionals, which will have a direct impact on the development of golf at a grassroots level. With more ALPG members coming through the PGA’s trainee and bridging programs and going on to further enhance their skills via the PGA’s Accreditation and Continuing Education Program, there will be an increased number of women coaching golf at a club level. The enhanced relationship between the two bodies will also provide more playing opportunities for female pros in Australia, providing them with access to the Choice PGA Pro-Am Series and ALPG tournaments. MORE > ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ __ HOT SUMMER OF GOLF BECKONS THE PGA Tour of Australasia has announced the schedule of tournaments for the second half of 2015, beginning with this month’s Queensland Open. The three main changes are a new date for the Perth International, an as-yet undetermined venue for the Australian Masters and a different season-ending tournament. The Masters will remain on the Melbourne Sandbelt, but there is no announcement as to which club will host the 37th edition. And rather than one of the ‘Triple Crown’ tournaments closing the season, it will be MAJOR MOMENT FOR CHUN YET again the US Women’s Open unearthed another South Korean star as In Gee Chun made it 10 Korean winners in the past 17 women’s majors with a one-stroke victory at Lancaster Country Club. The 20-year-old came into her first US Women’s Open ranked 20th in the world but was largely unfancied due to her lack of LPGA experience. To date Chun has spent most of her time on the Korean and Japanese LPGA circuits but successfully, which gave her the confidence to contend at the highest level. She showed poise beyond her years in the final round to card a 66 and overcome a four-stroke deficit, adding another surprise winner to the most illustrious trophy in the women’s game.
