Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 158 - PGA Preview
“There was a lot of moisture in the air, so the guys couldn’t get it as firm as they wanted it... For this part of the world, it’s as (links-like) as you’re going to get. If you get it firm, it will play very much like links golf.” “(Pete Dye) really makes you think. Early on in my career, I’d get on the tee box on a par four or par five and I’d take my driver andtrytoputitonthefairwayasfarasI could. You have to be on your game and very sharp mentally.” If McIlroy’s benign warning isn’t enough, Tiger Woods once said that if the wind blew there was no tougher course than Whistling Straits, a sentiment echoed by Sergio Garcia, who said it was “definitely the toughest course I’ve played in my life”. The first time Lee Westwood saw the course five years ago, he was left shaking his head. “I was told before I got here that there were 10 really difficult holes and eight impossible ones. I’m just trying to work out which the 10 difficult ones were,” he mused. With the PGA Championship often somewhat of a major afterthought, as the last (and arguably least prestigious) of the big four, another trek around Whistling Straits is exactly what it needs. OTG ANY GOLFER WHO’S SET FOOT ON A PETE DYE-DESIGNED COURSE KNOWS THEY’RE IN FOR A BRUTAL BATTLE. HOLESTO WATCH "ON THE ROCKS" PAR 4, 507 YARDS 8TH THERE can be no lapses in concentration here. Every shot has the potential to bring players undone. The long par 4 starts with a tee shot into a blind landing area, where they’ll want to stay left in order to avoid sand dunes, bunkers and Lake Michigan on the right. More sand dunes and deep bunkers await beside the green, while any approach shots sprayed way right will likely become victims of the Great Lake. "PINCHED NERVE" PAR 3, 223 YARDS 17TH UMMM...yeah...don’t go left. Or right, for that matter. ‘Treacherous’ doesn’t quite do Whistling Straits’ penultimate hole justice. This long par 3 features colossal 20-foot sand dunes – and Lake Michigan – to the left of the green, while the right is protected by more sand dunes and a series of bunkers. Beware all ye who enter. "DYEABOLICAL" PAR 4, 500 YARDS MOST of the field will be more than happy to walk away with a par at this Pete Dye special. The tee shot is everything – blast it too long and you’ll be through the fairway and fetching your ball out of Seven Mile Creek, but end up too short off the tee and you’ll be forced to lay it up short of the green. Fuzzy Zoeller once described it as “a joke” with “nothing good about it”. It’s risk versus reward, and it will almost guarantee an enthralling finish on Sunday. 18TH 3
