HENDERSON MAKES A STATEMENT SOMEWHAT lost amid the euphoria of Jason Day’s stunning PGA Championship victory was another significant victory across the US with rookie Brooke Henderson obliterating the Portland Classic field by eight strokes for her first LPGA victory at age 17. The Canadian is just the third player in LPGA history – joining Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko – to win before her 18th birthday, which is only weeks away on September 10. Henderson earned a spot in the field via Monday qualifying (with a 68) then built a five-stroke lead after 54 holes with rounds of 66-67-65 before pulling further away via a closing 3-under 69 to finish at 21-under. “I felt really good (on the course),” Henderson said. “I knew my game was 36 holes of strokeplay, the top-64 will move into seeded elimination matchplay to determine the winner.
