Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 159 - PGA Wrap
DID ELLERSTON JUST BECOME ACCESSIBLE? ELLERSTON Golf Course ranks among the most private in the world, let alone Australia, but the course that’s part of the Packer family’s exclusive Upper Hunter Valley retreat could potentially become more accessible, even if only fractionally. Crown Resorts is set to acquire a 50 per cent share of the 1,400-hectare estate for $60 million from the Packers’ Consolidated Press Holdings. Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reports that Crown, which is 50.1 per cent owned by Mr Packer, intends to use the luxury facilities at Ellerston to helicopter in high rollers from its new casino resort under construction at Barangaroo. The part of Ellerston in which Crown will acquire its 50 per cent stake includes luxury accommodation, a go-cart track, cinema, several swimming pools and the Greg Norman-designed golf course, which Golf Australia magazine ranks sixth in the land. Crown said the purchase does not include the property’s sheep and beef agricultural business. “The acquisition will enable Crown to give effect to its commitment to the New South Wales Government to give VIP gaming customers at Crown Sydney access to the luxury facilities at Ellerston,” Crown said in a statement. Chances are Crown will control access to Ellerston’s golf course in the same manner it does the highly exclusive Capital course in south-eastern Melbourne, but eager golf fans can hope, can’t they? ____ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ _ HURLEY STORY ENDS IN TRAGEDY SADLY, there was no happy ending in the story involving the missing father of PGA Tour player Billy Hurley III, with Willard Hurley Jnr passing away as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, nearly a month after he left home. The 61-year-old took his own life last Wednesday in Virginia, a fortnight after the player broke down in tears while announcing during the Quicken Loans National tournament that his father was missing. He was later found at a public library in Texas, watching his son play golf on a computer. He told police only that he had been travelling.
