O NE thing’s for sure: they got the name right. It’s trap city at The Sands Torquay golf course, and unashamedly so. Designed by Stuart Appleby in 2004, the veteran pro might have woken up wearing his cranky pants the day he put pencil to paper on this premium Surf Coast layout, such is the ever present threat of a sandy grave. From the tempting fairway bunker that lies in wait to the left off the first tee, to the green-sized traps hungry for errant approach shots at the 18th, there’s no such thing as a free swing here. Every shot requires prudent consideration and true risk-versus-reward analysis. Take the 318m par-4 second hole, for example. Players have the option of laying up short of the clusters of bunkers on both the left and right sides of the fairway, playing through the middle of the hazards but risking punching their tee shot long and into another bunker in the middle of the fairway, or trying to carry their ball over the
