Golf Australia Express : OTG Express 170
A ND so we arrive in the twilight zone. Or, as the locals like to call it, China. It’s a place that will capture the golfing world’s attention this week as the cream of the PGA Tour’s talent descends on Sheshan International Golf Club for the WGC-HSBC Champions. And it’s a place that just banned 88 million of its residents from playing the game. In case you missed it, less than a fortnight ago golf was outlawed among members of the country’s ruling Communist Party. That’s a staggering 88 million people, out of a population of around 1.4 billion, who are forbidden to play a sport that reportedly has only about 350,000 Chinese partaking in it regularly. A decade is a long time for an annual tournament to run in the fickle world of sporting sponsorships and public interest, and as such its longevity is an unofficial pointer to its success, yet as we approach the 11th HSBC Champions event, its position in China’s golfing landscape is about as clear as Shanghai’s afternoon air.
