IRISH GOLF LOSES A LEGEND IRISH golfing legend Christy O'Connor [pictured above] senior passed away at the weekend. He was 91. O’Connor, the son of a farmer in County Galway, burst onto the scene in the 1950s and was still contending for titles in the 1980s. He won the 1958 World Cup of golf, when it was known as the Canada Cup, for Ireland with Harry Bradshaw and he became a Ryder Cup stalwart, with his impressive record of competing in 10 matches only surpassed by Nick Faldo. O’Connor, the winner of 24 European Tour titles, had his best major results in The Open Championship when he finished in the top-10 ten times and was runner-up Peter Thomson in 1965 at Royal Birkdale. "Christy was in many ways the father of Irish golf and his death, so soon after that of his nephew Christy junior, means Ireland has lost two Ryder Cup legends in the space of five months," European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke said. "Christy senior was a golf icon and a wonderful person as well. He did so much for the game he graced for many years while the Ryder Cup to some extent is what it is today because of his passion for it. "Irish golf in particular and golf in general has lost one of its greatest heroes.” ______________________________________ CAIRNS CLASSIC RETURNS THE Qantas Golf Club Cairns Classic returns in 2016 with PGA professionals converging on one of North Queensland’s most iconic courses, Paradise Palms. Situated between two natural wonders – the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef – Paradise Palms is a Graham Marsh and Ross Watson-designed layout, just 20 minutes north of Cairns. Household names like Ian Baker-Finch and Wayne Grady have all played on the PGA Pro-Am Series Sunshine Swing, with the Tour providing playing opportunities for Australian professionals for the past 50 years.
