Golf Australia Express : GA Express 195
After winning the 1995 Open, Daly has returned to play 17 times for 11 missed cuts and a best result of T15 in 2005. You could list names for hours, but let’s pick out a couple, like Mark Calcavecchia [above], who has missed only one Open since his victory in 1989, and while he managed a tie for ninth in 2012, his three more recent performances either side of that year were all missed cuts. Last year he was 14 shots behind eventual winner Zach Johnson after the first round. Another American, Justin Leonard, takes his place in the Open field every year, having won in 1997. He’s missed the cut five of the last six years. Welshman Ian Woosnam has been absent from only one Masters tournament since his lone major success there in 1991, and while he remained competitive at Augusta in the decade that followed, since 2001 he’s played every year bar one and has missed the cut at 14 of his 15 attempts, including this year, when he shot just one birdie in two rounds and finished second last with scores of 82 and 81. Tournament selection criteria for both The Open Championship and PGA Championship decree that Daly and his fellow former champions can continue taking their place in the field for as long as their desire holds out, and their bodies allow.
