US OPEN DISPLAYS ITS DIGITAL SAVVY WORLDWIDE fans of the US Open will enjoy more ways to stay connected to the action at Oakmont Country Club via a dynamic suite of digital offerings released by the United States Golf Association. Among the enhancements is the updated US Open mobile app, released last Friday with groupings and starting times. With support from IBM, the app will feature an interactive map that can be customised via advanced search and GPS functionality. The locator feature provides fans with the capability to find their favourite players on the course, as well as points of interest and amenities. MORE> ______________________________________________________ POM’S NEW POST PETER O’Malley is the new chairman of the board of directors of the PGA of Australia, replacing renowned PGA professional and businessman Mark Gibson, who stepped down after successfully serving two full terms as chairman for the past six years. O’Malley has been a much-respected member of the PGA Tour of Australasia since 1987 and a member of the board since 2010 after recording eight victories around the world in a decorated playing career. Widely respected for his playing prowess and approachable demeanour, O’Malley’s appointment as chairman was unanimous and strongly supported by his fellow PGA pros. OTHER tours generally avoid staging tournaments in the same weeks as the men’s major championships, however a growing total number of LPGA events leaves the top women’s circuit with little option but to schedule a clash. This week’s Meijer LPGA Classic is a third- year tournament with a US$2 million purse and a defending champion the calibre of Lexi Thompson – not a bad recipe. And to that mix we can add the venerable host course. Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is an old-style design in contrast to the more modern layouts the LPGA often frequents.
