Golf Australia Express : GA Express 200
That’s PGA Tour golf for you. Lowry was looking on the bright side after confirming a few weeks ago that he would defend his title in Akron, forgoing the double Ryder Cup qualification points on offer at the French Open, where compatriot Rory McIlroy and other top players including Henrik Stenson and Masters champion Danny Willett will tee it up. “Naturally, Firestone holds some fantastic memories for me,” Lowry said. “I’ve known for a while in my own mind that I wanted to defend in Akron,” he earlier told the Irish Times. “Any players I’ve spoken to have said I’m right, even though it won’t count on the European Tour this season and doesn’t have any Ryder Cup points.” But how well the 29-year-old returns from the one that got away remains to be seen. After his final round he immediately flew 5000km away from that pain and those memories, back home to Ireland, and it was clear the wound would take some time to heal. “ The more I think about it, the more upset I get,” he said. “So that’s the way golf is.” “(I’m) bitterly disappointed, standing here. And you know it’s not easy to get yourself in a position I got myself in today. It was there for the taking and I didn’t take it.” There’s a curious statistic that likely won’t escape mention this week: Lowry and Hunter Mahan are the only Bridgestone winners in the last 21 years who don’t have a major title alongside their names. For Lowry, that fact will either be a sobering reminder of what went wrong at Oakmont, or an emboldening sign that a major prize lies in his near future. If anything can help Lowry rediscover a winning mindset, it’s the memory of going bogey-free on Sunday to win at Firestone 12 months ago. E THE LUCK OF THE IRISH WAS WITH LOWRY LAST YEAR. RELIVE HIS FIRESTONE FINISH IN THIS VIDEO.
