Golf Australia Express : GA Express 202
So what was missing, and what does Day need if he’s to hoist the claret jug at Royal Troon? If you take Johnson’s 2015 performance as a blueprint for Open success, it’s immediately clear that if Day is going to win this week, he needs to find a lot more fairways. A wayward tee shot at the 16th and subsequent trip into the water already cost him any chance of victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and he’ll let a bigger fish slip through his fingers if he’s similarly erratic from between the tee markers at Troon. Johnson found a stunning 55 out of 64 fairways at last year’s Open – the third best return of anyone in the field – to lay the groundwork for his major tilt. While he was 60th for driving distance, averaging less than 290 yards, and tied for 40th in greens in regulation, with 55 out of 72, his ability to avoid trouble off the tee – and the inevitable wasted shots it brings at the Open as you fight your way out of grass and brush – was the key to his success. Day’s prowess with the driver is renowned, but what it hasn’t been this year is accurate. So far this season he has hit just 343 of a possible 633 fairways – a strike rate of just 54.19 per cent. While he almost invariably makes up any lost ground the moment he sets foot on a green, history proves that rarely can a player chase his tail off the tee all week at the Open, and still expect to see his name up in lights on Sunday.
