Golf Australia Express : GA Express 204
20-under here like he did at Whistling Straits last August. One oddity to the Lower course at Baltusrol is there are no par-5s until the penultimate hole then back-to-back par- 5s to close the round. The 17th is a beast. Stretching 594 metres (650 yards), the hole [pictured top right] rises slightly and wasn’t reached in two shots by any golfer for decades until John Daly unleased a drive and 1-iron to the back half of the green during the 1993 US Open when it played 576 metres. “To hit 17 in two, that’s the only goal I had this week,” Daly said. “I told my caddie, Greg Rita, ‘We may not play good but at least we’ll make history.’ I swung as hard as I could on both shots. It was just one of those things. Maybe it was meant to be.” The 18th [pictured bottom right] is a little less demanding, but perhaps more strategic. Nearly 100 metres shorter at 506 metres this year (553 yards), it wraps around a pond left of the fairway in the driving zone before crossing a creek to a raised green almost encircled by bunkers. A last-gasp birdie here gave Mickelson his lone PGA title 11 years ago, but it’s the sort of finish where a 4-4 close could make a world of difference late on Sunday afternoon. And what became of the two men accused of murdering Baltus Roll? Peter B. Davis was acquitted but later convicted of forgery, only to die during his imprisonment, and Lycidias Baldwin took his own life via a narcotic overdose before he could be apprehended. One might argue the pair still got away with murder; an unlikely scenario at the PGA this week for golfers who stray from the prescribed paths at brutal Baltusrol. E
