Golf Australia Express : GA Express 206
T HE wait is finally over and golf’s return to the Olympic Games is here. But what sort of competition will this be? The easiest comparison is a World Golf Championship, just with a watered-down field and at a venue no one knows much about. The field is similar in size (60 in Rio versus 70- odd at most WGCs) and the format identical to all but the Dell Match Play. Incidentally, one of the main contenders learned only last week that there is no team component to the gold medal chase. “Now, I may be misinformed or just don’t know. You may have to help me. Is there no team format at all?” a curious Matt Kuchar asked the media at last week’s Travelers Championship. “When they first talked about it, if there were four Americans it was the two highest ranked and they were going to combine the scores for a team event. There is no combined? No team event whatsoever? Just an individual? We did the same thing at World Cup: 72-hole strokeplay. I played with Kevin Streelman. We never played together but we did represent the United States in a team format. “That was my initial impression of what was happening with the Olympics, but I’m incorrect on that.” Ah, Matthew. Hard to know who’s more at fault there, really. He’d do well to think of Olympic golf as a WGC with a weaker field enjoying the Brazilian sunshine. Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and the baffled Kuchar are playing, yet there’s still enough depth to suggest a potentially unheralded gold medallist. 2 x Nights Accommodation in a 2 or 3 Bedroom Apartment 1 x Round of 18 Holes starting from: Relax, Stay & Play in the Bay! email@example.com 02 4916 4777 Subject to availability.
