Golf Australia Express : GA Express 208
I T FEELS like an eternity ago to think back upon the day last October when Emiliano Grillo outduelled Kevin Na to win the Frys.com Open in extra holes in California’s sun-drenched Napa Valley. The Argentinean’s first PGA Tour victory opened the 2015/2016 PGA Tour season and 41 more tournaments followed in its wake. (A 42nd was cancelled when the Greenbrier Classic site was all but washed away due to severe flooding.) Now the season has come to its crescendo moment. The four majors are in the books (hands up who picked the eclectically talented quartet of Willett, Johnson, Stenson and Walker?) and golf has crowned its first Olympic champion in more than a century. But there remain several loose ends still to be tied up: 1) Who will be crowned Player of the Year? 2) Who will make the Ryder Cup teams on merit, and via captain’s picks? 3) Who will snare the final four tournaments of the season? 4) And who will take home the FedEx Cup trophy and US$10 million bonus? It was a concept that required some initial massaging but give the FedEx Cup Playoffs due credit for adding spice to a part of the golf season that used to have fans counting the days until the next year’s Masters. Now on our plate are four high-calibre tournaments with strong fields and big prizes.
