Golf Australia Express : GA Express 221
www.yarrayarra.com.au In Tom Doak’s ‘Confidential Guide’, a review of the architecture of the best courses in the world, the four par 3s at Yarra Yarra are rated seventh (the only course in this category in the Southern Hemisphere). The 11th hole, described by Peter Thomson as a ‘national treasure’, is invariably in the experts’ collections of the best 18 holes in Australia. BACK TO THE FUTURE SANITY prevailed in determining the format for this year’s World Cup. Where the Olympics faltered by making its return to the Games an individual strokeplay event and the 2013 World Cup erred in doing the same, with an individual prize awarded and the teams event all but an afterthought (with each nation’s two players combining their scores to determine the winner), the 2016 tournament is wisely distinguishing itself from every other golf tournament on the calendar. It marks a return to the purely team- based event employed from 2000 to 2011, and the tournament will undoubtedly be better for it. With individual strokeplay pushed out the door, the format will be four-ball team play on the first and third days of the tournament, while alternate shot will be used on Friday and Sunday. For a nation born and bred on team sports, it makes plenty of sense, and might help capture the interest of a few non-golf fans.
