AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR A THRILLER MATIAS Sanchez is the men’s Australian Amateur Champion after mowing down Min Woo Lee in an epic 36-hole final at Yarra Yarra Golf Club. The pair traded blows throughout the final, with Lee appearing to have done enough when he was 2-up with three holes to play. But 18-year- old Sanchez wasn’t done, and peeled off three consecutive hole wins to seal the title, including a successful birdie putt from 10m off the green at the 16th. Hye-jin Choi won the women’s event 4&2 against So-mi Lee. SEE THE IMAGE GALLERY HERE >> ________________________________________________ EASON SETS UNWANTED RECORD YOU’VE got to give Greg Eason points for persistence. But sadly those points don’t count for much on the Web.com Tour. Eason made headlines a couple of weeks ago when he claimed he’d lost 32 balls in the first two rounds at the wind-affected Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, where he shot rounds of 91 and 95. He was at it again on Monday at the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic, where the Brit grabbed a very unwanted accolade – a Web.com Tour record decuple bogey 15 at the final hole of his first round. He was already 8-over for the day before he reached the 18th, and signed for a 90 after the debacle, putting him at the bottom of the leaderboard, six shots adrift of the next player. _____________________________________________ RYDER CUP QUALIFICATION REJIGGED THE European Tour Tournament Committee has made three changes to its qualification process for the 2018 Ryder Cup. The committee will now weight points earned closer to the Cup more heavily, in order to ensure selected are in form closer to the event. There will also be no points available at events anywhere in the world staged at the same time as Rolex Series tournaments. The reduction in available points means there are fewer points available globally, so captain Thomas Bjorn will have an additional captain’s pick at his disposal. TRAPS AROUND the www.yarrayarra.com.au In Tom Doak’s ‘Confidential Guide’, a review of the architecture of the best courses in the world, the four par 3s at Yarra Yarra are rated seventh (the only course in this category in the Southern Hemisphere). The 11th hole, described by Peter Thomson as a ‘national treasure’, is invariably in the experts’ collections of the best 18 holes in Australia.
