2003: WEIR COMES FROM THE CLOUDS T HE 2001 event was only the second time in PGA Tour history that a six- man playoff was required to separate the leaders after 72 holes. And it was Australian ROBERT ALLENBY who emerged from the logjam to defeat Brandel Chamblee, Toshi Izawa, Dennis Paulson, Jeff Sluman and Bob Tway. Needing to do something special to distance himself from the five players around him, Allenby striped a 3-wood to eight feet at the first playoff hole, then rolled the putt home to secure the win. W E DON’T hear much about Mike Weir these days. It was a quick and sad decline for the major winner, whose surgery to repair a torn elbow tendon in 2011 all but wrecked his career. Last year his 10 PGA Tour events resulted in eight missed cuts and two withdrawals; the previous year it was one cut made from 18 events. But in 2003 Weir was the man. After going winless in 2002 he was back on the winner’s list at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, but things weren’t going to plan three weeks later at the Nissan Open when he found himself seven shots back heading into the final round. He then went on a tear, however, reeling in Charles Howell III’s seven-stroke lead before overcoming the American in a playoff. Weir rode that form to the Masters title six weeks later. A DAM SCOTT has the 2005 Nissan Open listed on his tally of career victories, but it’ll always have an asterisk beside it. Scott only needed to piece together two decent rounds and a playoff against Chad Campbell to capture the title, with two days completely washed out due to diabolical weather and the result declared as unofficial. 2001: ALLENBY’S SIX SHOOTER 2005: SCOTT WASHES FIELD AWAY
