1997: APPLEBY HOLES OUT T HE only thing better than Corey Pavin’s outstanding moustache and mullet at the 1992 event was the shot he hit to allow him eventually rip the title away from Fred Couples in a playoff. Needing a miracle to tie Couples at the 72nd hole, Pavin did the barely believable, slam dunking his 136-yard approach shot for an eagle that left him tied with Couples. He went on to defeat Couples in the playoff to claim his 10th PGA Tour title. STUART Appleby was the last Australian winner of the Honda Classic until Scott’s success last year, and it took a moment of magic to make it happen. Locked tight with Payne Stewart and Michael Bradley down the stretch, Appleby missed his second shot right of the green at the par-5 14th. But the Aussie casually flopped a peach of a wedge onto the fringe and watched it roll into the cup for an eagle, setting up his one-shot win. T HE way he played the rest of the week, Adam Scott should have had last year’s Honda Classic won halfway through Sunday. But his meltdown on the par-3 17th in the third round kept things interesting. Scott was aggressive in his line at the water-ringed green not once, but twice, and paid the price with two balls in the drink. He quadruple-bogeyed the hole but still outlasted Sergio Garcia by a stroke on Sunday. 2016: SCOTT SURVIVES QUADRUPLE BOGEY 1992: PAVIN STEALS TITLE WATCH IT HERE
