SPOTLIGHT WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY: BRENDAN JAMES GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Mandurah, Western Australia Meadow Springs A MERICAN course architect Robert Trent Jones Jnr was a regular visitor to Australia during the mid-1980s and early ‘90s, with several construction projects bearing his name coming to fruition. During this time he oversaw the completion of the first layout at The National, now known as the Old Course, the neighbouring Cape Schanck and on Queensland's Sunshine Coast there was Coolum. He also had two projects in Western Australia – the dramatic Joondalup Country Club, which is routed around an abandoned limestone quarry, and Meadow Springs, about 50 minutes’ drive south of Perth. While Jones was commissioned by different developers, his two WA course creations are today owned by the Kingsfield Corporation, which has invested heavily in both layouts to keep them considered among the top echelon of public access courses in this country.
