Golf Australia Express : GA Express 239
“I’m ready to see what I can do at the British Open and PGA Championship.” It seemed appropriate it was a precise 50-metre wedge from Smith that set up the winning putt in Monday’s playoff against Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown, given the Australian’s short game was almost unquestionably the best of anyone in the event over the previous four days. Smith said his dominance from in close was the result of an increased work ethic in what was already an area of strength. “Inside 100 (yards), I thought that it was my strong point in my game, and kind of because it was a strong point in my game, I kind of just let it go a bit (last year),” he said. “[I] really started working on that again this year, and yeah, to hit a shot like that under the pump, especially when you know you’ve got it, was pretty cool.” Smith joins a couple of other relatively accomplished players – Jason Day and Adam Scott – as the only Australians to have won a PGA Tour title before turning 24. Given an uninterrupted run at it, there’s no reason why similar success won’t await our newest star. E
