BARNBOUGLE DUNES 112-METRE, PAR-3 SEVENTH HOLE OFALL the holes to be found at Barn- bougle Dunes, few strike as much fear into the golfer standing on the tee than the diminutive par-3 7th hole. Named ‘Tom’s Little Devil’ after course designer Tom Doak, it measures just 112 metres from the back pegs but the tee shot here can be played with any club from a 5-iron through to a sand wedge depending on the ferocity of the wind on the day. Nestled within the high dunes behind Barn- bougle beach, the tiny green is surrounded by deep bunkers and steep run-offs from the rounded edges of the dramatically undulating putting surface. The key to getting away with a par here is to get your shot angle and trajectory perfect for your ball to hold the green. It is, for that reason, why I would argue there is no hole in world golf of such length that provokes as much thought about the tee shot as Barnbougle’s diabolical 7th.
