L LOYD Mangrum entered the world in Trenton, a tiny town in north-east Dallas that had only 635 residents at the most recent US census. Though often forgotten in discussions about the game’s greats, Mangrum’s 42 professional wins, including the 1946 US Open, earns him a rightful place as one of the best ever to have played, let alone out of the Lone Star state. T EXAS born and bred and still a Dallas resident to this day, Justin Leonard’s career might be getting the wind-up, but he’s still one of the greatest golfers his state has produced.
