TARA ITI GOLF CLUB MANGAWHAI, NEW ZEALAND N EW Zealand’s most exclusive golf club, Tara Iti, opened for play in October 2015 and in the time since it has been compared to the likes of Scotland’s Royal Dornoch and the famous Californian layout, Cypress Point. Designed by American course architect Tom Doak, Tara Iti was laid out amid the dunes north of Te Arai Point, a favoured headland among Northland surfers, about 90 minutes’ drive northeast of Auck- land. The 11km stretch of beach has remained largely undiscovered, despite its proximity to Auckland. "Once a golf course routing is finished, we start building holes in some sort of sequence that makes sense for construction purposes, and we pretty much never walk the course in order from 1 to 18 until it's ready to open," Doak said. "So, what I appreciated most about Tara Iti was the pacing and rhythm of it. What also struck me is how much it plays like a links – and how fun that is. You can't take your eye off the ball until it stops rolling.” Tara Iti is the first course in New Zealand to fea- ture fescue turf on fairways and greens to provide true links playing conditions. As the name of this page suggests, getting a round here might be a dream come true. If you know a member you’re in luck, although international visi- tors can apply via the website for a one-time visit. E WWW.TARAITI.COM thedream FLY OVER THIS DREAM COURSE IN THIS VIDEO.
