Golf Australia Express : GA Express 245
R ISK and reward, here. Rub your hands together if a player reaches the 14th hole a few shots back and needs to make up some ground on Sunday. At 594 yards it’ll be reachable in two for big hitters, but only if you’re prepared to take on the thick grass that carves a huge chunk out of the right side of the hole on the approach. Oh, and there’s the enormous false front on the green, a deep bunker low and right, and if you’re far enough off target there’s a river, too. But lay up and your third shot is just about blind over that patch of rough. Golf is fun, sometimes, isn’t it? A HOLE that looks relatively benign off the tee, the 15th will prove time and again this week just how mean a course designer can be. One of the designers, Ron Whitten, has said publicly they tried to make the bunkers surrounding this elevated green as deep and as nasty as they possibly could. What makes the bunkers so tough around Erin Hills has, by all accounts, nothing to do with the sheer number or placement of them (though that’s tough, too) but everything to do with the design of the traps themselves. With lies sloping every which way, as well as little nooks and crannies where you could find yourself with no option but to punch out sideways or backwards from the bunker rather than take a shot at the green, they are brutal.
