AGE: 32 COUNTRY: USA WORLD RANKING: 1 WHY HE CAN WIN: DUSTIN Johnson defends his title this week and despite a missed cut at The Memorial in his last start, he is rightfully entrenched as the favourite at Erin Hills. DJ has been well above the rest in 2017, recording three consecutive wins earlier in the year to go along with four other top-10s. With Erin Hills untested, the course doesn’t give many hints, but Johnson went close at Chambers Bay in 2015, the only other first-time venue in recent history that has drawn comparisons to Erin Hills. Johnson’s driving will give him a distinct advantage at the monstrous Erin Hills and his improved wedge play will hold him in good stead approaching the many raised greens and mown run-off surrounds. AGE: 23 COUNTRY: USA WORLD RANKING: 5 WHY HE CAN WIN: A FAVOURITE due to his win at Chambers Bay and as one of the few players in the field with tournament experience at Erin Hills, making the quarter finals of the 2011 US Amateur. Both give him a distinct advantage over the field despite Spieth stating he struggles to remember much of the course. He seems to have corrected the patch of indifferent form that saw him miss back-to-back cuts last month, netting ties for 2nd at Colonial and 13th at The Memorial. The American also appears to have moved past his temporary putting woes that resulted in a quickly abandoned change of putters in Texas. If his putting is close to his brilliant best, coupled with his improved ball-striking, Spieth will be a force to be reckoned with at Erin Hills. DUSTIN JOHNSON JORDAN SPIETH KEY STAT: Ranked 1st in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Driving Distance on the PGA Tour. KEY STAT: Ranked 4th in Greens in Regulation on the PGA Tour.
