JASON DAY SERGIO GARCIA AGE: 29 COUNTRY: Australia WORLD RANKING: 3 WHY HE CAN WIN: THE top-ranked Australian hasn’t had the 2017 he would have hoped for. After battling illness and dealing with his mother’s ill health, Day has returned to a somewhat full (for him) schedule and he’s started producing promising results: a playoff loss to Billy Horschel in Texas was followed by a tie for 15th at his hometown Memorial event. Erin Hills is not far from the transplanted Aussie’s home base in Ohio and the US Open appears to be a tournament Day could one day capture. The Queenslander has made the weekend in all six starts at the US Open and has only missed the top-10 once, in 2012 at The Olympic Club. Right in the mix at Chambers Bay, before vertigo destroyed his chances, Day is one of the best putters on Tour and hits the ball sky high, making his game appear tailor-made for Erin Hills. AGE: 37 COUNTRY: Spain WORLD RANKING: 7 WHY HE CAN WIN: THE newly minted Masters Champion will look to replicate Jordan Spieth’s 2015 feat of following his first major title with the next available. His Masters win removed a silverback from Sergio Garcia’s back and the freedom should see him ready to attack Erin Hills. Garcia has had a stellar 2017 with a win in Dubai and his triumph at Augusta the highlights among a perfect 10 for 10 made cuts. His game has been firing in every department and he will be unlikely to find a US Open course that suits him better. The course's length will suit his outstanding driving while his scrambling and bunker game will keep him out of trouble in the deep rough. While the US Open hasn’t been Sergio’s favourite event, his Masters victory and upcoming wedding show 2017 is a year of new beginnings for Garcia. KEY STAT: Ranked 1st in Scoring Average on the PGA Tour. KEY STAT: Ranked 3rd in Sand Save Percentage.
