THE GREATEST... TEST OF GOLF THE GREATEST... GALLERIES T HE US Open boasts about being the toughest test in golf. But one could easily make the argument that a links course offers a greater challenge. The Open, when played on hard and fast fairways and greens in a variety of testing weather conditions, makes it far more difficult for players to control their ball than in any other major. No other major levels the playing field – enabling a short straight hitter to overcome prodigious, sometimes crooked, hitters – better than The Open. OPEN fans are always respectful of the players, generously supporting one and all no matter what country they are from. Rarely does an idiot yell “get in the hole” or “mashed potato” and, if they did, locals would drag them into line with a cordial “shut up” in a very British and dignified way. And what better sight is there in the game than the gallery folding in behind the final pairing as they walk to the 18th green late on Sunday afternoon? Gotta love The Open. The. Greatest. Of. Them. All.
