To stay where we are risks consigning us to allowing external forces to influence our longevity,” Yarra Yarra club president David Blake said. “To ensure a viable future we need to have a course that reflects the greatness of its original design; that is fun and challenging so that people want to play the course; and a club that people want to join – for the next 50 to 100 years.” Club Captain Bruce Davison added: “With Brian Slawnik leading the RGD team here at Yarra Yarra there is justifiable optimism that, in the not-too-distant future, our course will return to its rightful position as a top level course in this country.” The RGD team has some terrific land and the bones of great holes to work with, especially its collection of par-3s. Yarra Yarra has become renowned for the quality of its four one-shot holes which, as a group, are unrivalled in Australia. In his book, The Confidential Guide To Golf Courses, Tom Doak rated the collection of par-3s at Yarra Yarra as the seventh best in the world. Yarra Yarra opens with its longest par-3 – a downhiller of 201 metres – but it is the shortest of the one-shotters a few holes later that really gets the golfing juices flowing. On a calm day, the 118-metre hole demands little more than a solid pitch uphill to find the heart of the narrow green. But the penalty for missing the target is severe with deep bunkers ringing the tiered putting surface.
