COVER STORY “I just have to continue to work on my body and game and see where I pan out,” Woods said. “I wish I knew where I was going to play and when I was going to play – it’s a lot easier to prep for that – but we really don’t know.” What is certain is that Woods will follow his start at Torrey Pines with a return to the famed Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Open in three weeks and his schedule will, as always, be focused on the year’s four biggest events. “I think that we're going to sit down here, we're going to figure out what's the best way for me to build my schedule for the major championships,” Woods said at the Hero Challenge. First, Woods must pass a different test at Torrey. He might be the hometown favourite and multiple past champion, but the former World No.1 will tackle a new course and have a target on his newly fused back as a swathe of young talent attempt to beat the man who many idolised as children. “... I want to beat his brains in like I want to beat everyone's brains in on Tour every week I play. I still am and always will be a huge Tiger Woods fan,” Thomas said of Tiger’s return. Torrey Pines’ North course’s significant renovation in 2016 means the course is now very different to the track Woods played as a youngster, with his only appearance since the renovation resulting in a missed cut. The South, site of Woods’ most remarkable career victory in the 18-hole playoff with Mediate, however, will be more familiar. “Overall I've had a lot of success here. I won a Junior World here when I was 15 and then my eight wins here at Torrey,” Woods said. “For some reason I feel comfortable here on this golf course, whether it was before the redo of the South or post redo, and hopefully post redo of the North.” Four rounds of pain free golf would mark a successful start to 2018 for the army of Tiger fans, but for the ultra-competitive Woods internally the bar will be set significantly higher as he attempts to show the new generation, like Thomas, that he isn’t finished just yet. “In an ideal world, I would like to have them (younger players) feel what some of my past guys had to go against all those years. I'd like to have them feel that same play,” Woods said. If he is true to his word Tiger won’t be the only one excited. E 10AMAZING TIGER MOMENTS 1. AUGUST 26, 2000 190 YARD ... WEDGE 3.
