COVER STORY JON RAHM VS. PHIL MICKELSON From the outside looking in, Phil Mickelson and Jon Rahm would appear to be polar opposites in almost every sense. Yet despite their differences, including a 24-year age gap, the pair is connected in more ways than one. Both are products of Arizona State University and Mickelson’s brother and caddy, Tim, is Rahm’s former coach and agent. Rahm finished runner-up here last year, and speaks highly of both Mickelsons, while Phil regularly heaps praise on the young Spaniard. “He’ll get there (No. 1), eventually,” Mickelson said. “He’s so talented and to have him do it as quickly as he had right out of college, very impressive. Not only that, he’s such a nice guy to be around.” Which of the ASU graduates would reign supreme should they go head-to-head? DUSTIN JOHNSON VS. RORY MCILROY This would have to be one of the most anticipated matches, should it eventuate; the two longest players of the 2017 season trading blows. Rory McIlroy averaged a whopping 317.2 yards off the tee last year, while World No.1 and defending champion Dustin Johnson trailed, ever so slightly, at 315 yards. McIlroy began 2018 poorly on the US Tour before triumphing at Bay Hill last week, and boasts a match play winning record of 64 percent. Johnson, once again, trails slightly at 62 percent – all of which suggests that this would be a thrilling match to observe.
