BUBBA DONS THE GREEN JACKET T HE phrase “Bubba Golf” is used to describe the miraculous shots produced by the charismatic Bubba Watson, and has become more and more prevalent in recent years. But its origin arguably dates back to 2012, when Watson played one of the greatest shots in Masters play-off history to claim his first green jacket. Watson was stuck in the trees at the second hole (10th) of a sudden-death playoff against Louis Oosthuizen. He was 149 metres from the putting surface and looked as though he would have to play sideways off the pine straw to try and save his par. The Floridian decided, instead, to produce a moment of magic. He took out his 52 degree wedge, closed his stance and hit an incredible 40-yard hook around a TV tower to find the green, before two-putting for par and claiming his first major championship. “I got in those trees and hit a crazy shot that I saw in my head and somehow I’m here talking to you with a green jacket on,” Watson told reporters. “I hit my gap wedge, hooked it about 40 yards, hit about 15 feet off the ground until it got under the tree and then started rising. Pretty Easy. “Even though the tower was in my way, I didn’t want to ask if I get relief or anything, because it just set up for a perfect draw – well, hook.” Watson became the third left-hander to win the Masters, joining Mike Weir (2003) and Phil Mickelson (2004, 2006 & 2010), and would go on to win again in 2014. 2012 THIS WEEK IN ... • Football Federation Australia revokes the A-League license of Gold Coast United FC. • Apple Inc. claims a value of $600 billion, making it the largest company by market capitalisation in the world. • The Lion King becomes the highest grossing Broadway show after overtaking The Phantom of the Opera. • Somalia’s National Theatre is struck by a suicide bomber, killing 10 people, including the presidents of the Somali Olympic Committee and Football Federation.
