Golf Australia Express : GA Express 281
I T'S shortly before 5pm on a Sunday afternoon in early April. But it’s no ordinary Sunday afternoon. Fast forward seven days and the coveted green jacket would be slipped over the shoulders of another Masters Champion. It’s a moment vividly pictured in my mind while standing behind Augusta National’s 12th tee. There’s not a soul to be seen as I look back up the 11th fairway. Peering through the trees to my right I can see nearly all the way to the 13th green ... no one. I had the course to myself ... indeed it was no ordinary Sunday afternoon. The sun was doing its best to punch through the pines but the shadows quickly spread to fill every inch of the manicured grass below. The air was still across the lowest point of the course alongside Rae’s Creek, and was its usual two or three degrees cooler than you might find outside the clubhouse – some 10 minutes’ walk away via the edge of the 10th or 18th holes. Welcome to Amen Corner – hallowed turf that is home to the most famous trio of golf holes in the world. ► WATCH: JORDAN SPIETH'S 12TH HOLE CALAMITY ► AMEN CORNER THE AIR WAS STILL ACROSS THE LOWEST POINT OF THE COURSE ALONGSIDE RAE’S CREEK, AND WAS ITS USUAL TWO OR THREE DEGREES COOLER THAN YOU MIGHT FIND OUTSIDE THE CLUBHOUSE.
