Golf Australia Express : Launch
ONE of the greatest clutch shots in history was also one of the most heartbreaking for Greg Norman. On the second playoff hole at the 1987 Masters, 28-year-old local Larry Mize and Norman looks certain to head to a third deciding hole. That was until Mize pulled off the unthinkable: a 140-foot chip that bounced twice before the green and once again on the putting surface, then continuing to roll halfway across the 11th green before plonking into the hole. It was one of many Masters disappointments in the ensuing years that the Shark would have to swallow. SCORING a hole-in-one is difficult enough at the best of times, let alone in a playoff for a PGA Tour event. And in the dark, no less! That’s exactly what American Jonathan Byrd managed to achieve at the 2010 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. While neither he nor playoff partners Martin Laird and Cameron Percy saw it drop, the roars from the dark green in the distance said it all. Clutch! HOW much pressure must Stuart Appleby have been feeling standing over this putt at the inaugural Greenbrier Classic in 2010. The Victorian had just 11-feet between him and the record books. Not only would it give him the clubhouse lead in the final round, but a holed putt would result in a final round score of 11-under par at a course with a par 70. You do the math. Appleby had just one chance to join one of golf’s rarest clubs. It’s all he needed. Shelving his nerves, Appleby stepped up and drained the putt to become just the fifth Tour player in history to shoot a round of 59. He went on to win the event, his first in four years.
