Golf Australia Express : Issue 3
SHOTMAKING IS THERE a better feeling— in golf anyway—than smoking a massive drive, imparting backspin on a sweetly-timed iron or holing out from around the green? After all, to experience any of these feels pretty cool—even if only from within. However, there’s apparently one shot that evokes a sensation above all others— one could say, almost spiritual. A shot reserved sparingly and only for golf’s flukiest. Of course I refer to golf’s holy grail: scoring a hole-in-one. According to OTG’s editor-in-chief (over and over again), penciling a one on your scorecard is pretty ace. So for the rest of us—golf’s unlucky group—it isn’t all doom and gloom. The challenge of joining our arsey friends on the other side is a stirring emotion in itself. In the meantime we have the thrill of anticipation on our side—surely that’s the most sexy sensation of all? PLACES SUN-DRENCHED beach resorts and idyllic island getaways create a sexy mood (think Hawaii, Thailand or Mauritius). Old-world golf settings like Ireland, Scotland or Japan stir feelings for romance. Alpine panoramas like those of Switzerland, Canada or New Zealand remind us of sheer beauty. And remote arid desert locations are, well it has to be said, simply hot (think parts of the US, Australia and South Africa). You can find a game of golf in all these environments and in all corners of the globe. Let’s face it; we love a sport that can be played in the most stunning places. And when you consider other sports or hobbies only present the same old same-old setting, we really are blessed. If variety is the spice of life, then are the places in golf the zing that get’s your juices flowing? EQUIPMENT OK SO we’re on the record as saying “golf equipment, for the most part, is far from being considered sexy”. But we admit, there are some worthy exceptions. Over the ages golfers have been obsessed with length—in particular, off the tee. Sleek, powerful and made of material to go the distance, the trusty driver is held dear to the chests of many. With the advent of rangefinders—GPS and laser—there are plenty of gadgets on the market to keep both the boys and the girls entertained and on course. Then there is the recent explosion of body hugging compression gear coming into golf—fine materials putting pressure in all the right places in the name of better performance. Now is that enough to arouse your vote? PLAYERS UNLESS your playing partner is your ‘life companion’, evaluating whether players make golf sexy could be a tad weird for you. So we’d better move on and ask whether it’s the players you watch—the game’s elite—who make golf sexy to you. After all, this is the one time when all above come together, and regularly. [Ahem.] With the pros you can bank on seeing great shots pretty much all the time and for the most part, they’re always playing on stunning courses. Some make the effort to clad attractively and there are enough characters to keep our attention. But is being a golf voyeur enough to take your breath away? OTG BIG Q THE WHY’S GOLF SEXY TO YOU? HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE STATE OF THE GAME...
