Golf Australia Express : Issue 4
PEEK THE The mystical Killarney Golf and Fishing Club screams Ireland from the first tee. Stunning, green countryside, rolling hills and ancient rocks surround this course which opened in1972. It was designed by Killarney local Dr Billy O’Sullivan a, before receiving a more recent redesign by Tom Mackenzie. The stunning setting of the course makes it a perfect place to hold a national open. Built alongside the picturesque Lough Leane, water comes into play most prominently on the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 10th holes. The 10th is a particularly beautiful par 3 which plays straight out towards the wet stuff. Simply stunning. With light winds the course opens itself up to some low scoring, but if the gust picks up players will be needing some local luck to get over the line. The course is also home to several varieties of deer (red and seeker) and Lough Leane is full of salmon and trout. No doubt players will be hoping they go fly fishing post-event rather than during it. But depending on the weather at Killarney, that choice might not be all theirs.
