Golf Australia Express : Issue 7
THE SAFEWAY Classic is one of the more popular events on the LPGA Tour. Titled Safeway Classic since 1996, this week marks the 40th staging of the tournament, which is again to be held at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. It’s the same site that hosted a record 87,800 crowd in 2009. Many of the world’s best female golfers will tee it up this week after a two-week break from Tour golf following the Women’s British Open. One of the longer running events on the LPGA Tour, this event was first held back in 1972 as the Portland Ladies Classic. SAFEWAY TO 40 JAPAN’S AI Miyazato shot a final-round even-par 72 to win the Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge, her fifth victory of 2010. Miyazato, the World No. 2 ranked player leading into the event, held off then World No.1 Cristie Kerr and Na Yeon Choi to win by two shots at 11-under. Miyazato and Kerr traded blows for much of the back nine before Kerr, playing in the group ahead, dunked her approach in the water on the 431-yard par-4 final hole. While she got up-and- down for bogey, Miyazato’s par was good enough to clinch the win and return her to the No.1 spot.
