Golf Australia Express : Issue 8
THEFIRST event in the 2010 FedExCup PGA TOUR Playoffs produced a stunning conclusion with American Matt Kuchar facing off with Scot Martin Laird in a playoff. Kuchar closed his final round with a 5-under 66, and it still didn’t look as though it would be enough. Laird had a one- shot lead and needed two putts from just inside 25 feet for the victory on the final green. He ran his putt seven feet past the hole and missed the par putt coming back, sending the event into a playoff. The two played the 18th again and Kuchar knocked his 7-iron approach out of the rough toward the back of the green before his ball caught enough of the slope to come back toward the hole and stop 30 inches away. Birdie. And victory. The win was a sign of changing fortunes for Kuchar. Up until then he had placed nine times inside the top 10 in 2010—including twice in majors. And The Barclays rewarded him generously as he banked a cool $1.35 million, his biggest cheque of the year.
