Golf Australia Express : Issue 9
THEREARE few more spectacular locations in the world of golf than the Crans-sur-Sierre. This stunning course, set high in the mountains of Crans Montana, will host the Omega European Masters for the 65th year. Past champions include Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosnam, Sir Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal, Lee Westwood and Ernie Els. First played in 1923, this event is an integral part of the European Tour schedule, played at one of the highest and most picturesque venues. Since 2009, it has had joint sanctioning with the Asian Tour, giving the 30 best players on that tour the opportunity to challenge their European counterparts. ATHIS 22nd successive trip to Crans-sur-Sierre, Miguel Angel Jiménez finally got his hands on the European Masters trophy. The 46-year- old Spaniard, six clear with seven to play in the fourth round, saw his lead slashed to just one stroke as Edoardo Molinari challenged. But at the short 16th the Italian faltered with a bogey as Jiménez got up-and-down from a fairway bunker for a critical par. Jiménez followed it with a birdie on the next to maintain his three-shot overnight lead. The Spaniard became the eighth oldest winner in European Tour history with a his 4-under par 67 on the final day to card an overall 21-under total of 263. He was also the first player to record three victories in the 2010 season. Molinari’s 17-year-old compatriot Matteo Manassero finished third.
