Golf Australia Express : Issue 11
AMERICAN BYRON Nelson retired from golf at just 34. Despite a brief 14-year career on Tour, the Texan achieved plenty before setting off to be a rancher. In the 1930s and 40s Lord Byron as he was known, ruled the fairways. He led leaderboards with monotonous regularity and reigned supreme more than 50 times on the PGA Tour. In 1945 Nelson enjoyed a record- breaking year that’s still regarded as the greatest single year by a player on the PGA Tour. He won a staggering 18 of 35 PGA tournaments including 11 in a row. Both records are yet to be beaten. For the record Nelson also finished second seven times that season—rather noble of Lord Byron to share the spoils.
