PAYNE STEWART would have won more than 11 PGA Tour events. While other golfers rue missed putts and believe fluky chip- ins have robbed them of titles, in Stewart’s case it was the opportunity to win that was unfairly taken from him. Four months after winning his third major—the 1999 US Open—Stewart and five others died when the plane they were flying crashed in a field in South Dakota.
