Golf Australia Express : Issue 12
If you’ve ever wondered what playing golf with wild animals was like, ask us to join you for a round. Otherwise, you could just head to Leopard Creek where spotting a cheetah is not a bad thing. DREAM THE WILD GAME IF ONLY YOU COULD... IFYOU’RE after an untamed golf experienced then check out Leopard Creek Country Club. Situated near Malelane in the heart of Mpumalanga South Africa, the 6631-metre Gary Player designed layout promises a truly remarkable golfing experience. That’s because the 360-hectare development is bordered to the north and west by the picturesque Crocodile River and the Kruger National Park—one of the largest game reserves in Africa. Hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek. Imagine sharing the fairway with a giraffe or an antelope, hearing a hippopotamus snorting in your backswing, spying a lion resting against the fence, or pitching over a lake full of crocodiles? Now they’re encounters you’re sure to remember. This is a course in-tune with nature. Lakes and streams meander through the course and help maximise the environmental experience, with scenic vistas just an element of the course where water features prominently. The 505-metre par-5 13th is one of Leopard Creek’s most memorable holes. Here the green is right on the edge of the Crocodile River, but 32 metres above the water, offering magnificent views up the river and into Kruger National Park. The par-3 16th is a 180-metre carry to a three-quarter island green with hippos inhabiting the lake. Player would be proud of the par-5 18th with its island green, and the par-4 9th with a peninsula green jutting out over water. This is one place where a good caddie will aide your score and look after your well-being. Leopard Creek Country Club is a blend of golf and safari. A wild experience indeed.
